# Explain a spike

> Which version, service, host or route a spike comes from.

The timeline over a result shows the message count per bucket, and — when the stream logs durations and statuses — the 95th percentile and the failure rate over it.

Hold <kbd>⌥</kbd> and drag across a spike. Flux compares the stretch with the three times as long before it, over fields such as `version`, `service`, `host` and `route`, and lists the values that make up a far larger share of the spike than of the time before:

| field | value | in the stretch | before it |
| - | - | - | - |
| version | v2.4.1 | 92% | 8% |
| host | payments-2 | 88% | 31% |
| route | POST /v1/charges | 79% | 40% |

Click a row to narrow the console to that value. Dragging without <kbd>⌥</kbd> narrows the range instead.

With a project's GitHub repository set, the pull requests merged during the window are drawn on the timeline, so a spike that starts just after one is a question with half its answer.
