# Connections

> Graylog, Elasticsearch through Kibana, or files and containers on your Mac.

Open **Settings › Connections** (⌘,) and add a connection. Each one names its kind:

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Graylog">
    The Graylog URL and an access token. Make the token under your Graylog profile › **Edit tokens**. Flux lists the streams the token can read, and
    derives the endpoints each stream carries from the fields its messages log.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Kibana">
    The Kibana URL and an API key — the *encoded* value from **Stack Management › API keys**. Flux lists the data views as streams.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Local">
    A folder of log files — every `.log`, `.jsonl` and rotated `.log.1` under it is a stream — or one file. Write `docker` to read the running
    containers instead.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

**Test** asks the source for its version and its streams before you save.

<Note>
  A connection's token is kept in your Mac's login keychain, one entry per connection under the name **Flux**, and never in a file Flux writes. It is
  never synced, exported or put in a link. Signed releases keep the keychain's permission from one update to the next, so macOS does not ask for it
  again.
</Note>

## The tree

Connections open to their streams, and streams to their endpoints — `Connection › Project › Stream › Endpoint`. Endpoint rows carry their request count and error rate for the last hour, and are coloured by health. **View options** on the explorer's toolbar chooses what each row shows.

The tree reads from a cache so it opens instantly; **Refresh** asks the source again.

## Projects

A project groups streams that belong to one service, and can name its GitHub repository. With a repository set, the pull requests merged while a query ran are drawn on the timeline, and the island watches the ten minutes after each merge.

## Handing over a set-up

**Connections › Export connections…** writes the connections you choose, the projects on them and, if you want, their saved queries to one file. Tokens never go in it.

**Connections › Import connections…** reads such a file, or a `.env` with `GRAYLOG_URL` and `GRAYLOG_TOKEN` lines, and shows what is new before it changes anything. A connection already set up by the same URL stays as it is. Connections from a set-up file arrive without a token: **Add their tokens…** opens Settings › Connections to paste your own.
